The Village of Harriman is in the southeast part of the Town of Monroe.

The village is named after E. H. Harriman, former president of the Union Pacific railroad. Previously, it was known as Turner (or Turners).

Harriman State Park

Harriman State Park, located in Rockland and Orange counties, is the second-largest park in the parks system, with 31 lakes and reservoirs, 200 miles of hiking trails, three beaches, two public camping areas, a network of group camps, miles of streams and scenic roads, and scores of wildlife species, vistas and vantage points. Harriman State Park's major facilities include Lakes Welch, Sebago, Tiorati and Silvermine, the Anthony Wayne Recreation Area, Sebago Cabins and Beaver Pond Campgrounds.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 2,252 people, 927 households, and 588 families residing in the village.

There were 927 households out of which 35.6% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.8% were married couples living together, 12.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 36.5% were non-families. 29.9% of all households were made up of individuals and 10.0% had someone living independently who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.43 and the average family size was 3.10.

In the village the population was spread out with 26.2% under the age of 18, 5.9% from 18 to 24, 38.2% from 25 to 44, 19.9% from 45 to 64, and 9.8% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 35 years. For every 100 females there were 98.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 92.9 males.  The median income for a household in the village was $60,089, and the median income for a family was $63,631.
