The town was formed from parts of the Towns of Mamakating and Thompson in 1837.
Geography
Part of the south town line is the border of Orange County, New York.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 147.1 km?(56.8 mi?. 143.0 km?(55.2 mi? of it is land and 4.2 km?(1.6 mi? of it (2.83%) is water.
Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there were 833 people, 327 households, and 222 families residing in the town. The population density was 5.8/km?(15.1/mi?. There were 500 housing units at an average density of 3.5/km?(9.1/mi?.
There were 327 households out of which 28.1% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.2% were married couples living together, 6.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.1% were non-families. 26.9% of all households were made up of individuals and 12.2% had someone living independently who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.53 and the average family size was 3.03.
In the town the population was spread out with 22.1% under the age of 18, 5.2% from 18 to 24, 25.7% from 25 to 44, 31.1% from 45 to 64, and 16.0% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 43 years. For every 100 females there were 91.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 97.3 males.
