Pomona, New York

Pomona is a village in Rockland County, New York. The population was 2,726 at the 2000 census.

The Village of Pomona was incorporated February 3, 1967 from unincorporated areas of the towns of Haverstraw and Ramapo.

The current mayor is Nick Sanderson of the Village Community Party. Sanderson unseated incumbent and longtime mayor Herb Marshall in March 2007.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 6.3 km?(2.4 mi?, 3.6 km?(1.4 mi? of which is in the town of Haverstraw and 2.7 km?(1 mi? of which is in the town of Ramapo. All of Pomona's total area is land.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 2,726 people, 906 households, and 813 families residing in the village. The population density was 433.1/km?(1,123.0/mi?. There were 925 housing units at an average density of 147.0/km?(381.1/mi?.

There were 906 households out of which 35.5% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 81.1% were married couples living together, 5.5% had a female householder with no husband present, and 10.2% were non-families. 7.7% of all households were made up of individuals and 2.6% had someone living independently who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.94 and the average family size was 3.08.

In the village the population was spread out with 22.3% under the age of 18, 6.4% from 18 to 24, 23.7% from 25 to 44, 36.9% from 45 to 64, and 10.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 44 years. For every 100 females there were 99.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 98.8 males.

The median income for a household in the village was $103,608, and the median income for a family was $108,399.

  • The CEJJES Institute - a cultural, educational, and research foundation dedicated to improving the educational and social conditions for all disenfranchised people. The Institute has a particular emphasis on the lives of children of color.
  • Rockland African Diaspora Heritage Center - Public Museum - Focuses on the lives of the Rockland and New York State black residents during the American Revolution, time of slavery, and the Civil War. as well as the arts, intellectual trandition and migration. First exhibit - Thurgood Marshall's visit to Hillburn, New York
