History

The town was created from the Town of Lumberland in 1807 and became the fourth town in the county. Afterwards the town changed its dimensions by the removal of other towns and the addition of part of another.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 209.0 km?(80.7 mi?. 206.2 km?(79.6 mi? of it is land and 2.8 km?(1.1 mi? of it (1.36%) is water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 9,632 people, 3,711 households, and 2,263 families residing in the town. The population density was 46.7/km?(121.0/mi?. There were 5,350 housing units at an average density of 25.9/km?(67.2/mi?.

There were 3,711 households out of which 30.9% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 42.7% were married couples living together, 13.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 39.0% were non-families. 32.2% of all households were made up of individuals and 13.6% had someone living independently who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.43 and the average family size was 3.08.

In the town the population was spread out with 24.7% under the age of 18, 7.6% from 18 to 24, 27.4% from 25 to 44, 23.5% from 45 to 64, and 16.8% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females there were 95.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 92.2 males.

The median income for a household in the town was $32,022, and the median income for a family was $37,689.
